94pts WA - The Gianni Brunelli estate may be the best little winery in Montalcino you’ve never heard of! Traditionally these wines are snapped up by NYC restaurants before they make retail shelves, so while the profile has been lower than other estates, the quality is extraordinarily high. With two small vineyards Podernovone and Le Chiuse near the township of Montalcino, this tiny estate encompasses just 6 hectares. The soil of Podernovone, made up of calcareous-marly schists, reflects light and heat to the grapes. The different climate of the two properties (fresh and airy at Le Chiuse di Sotto with a lot of rain in the summer and warmer and ventilated at Podernovone) results in complex and elegant wines. These are wines of traditional elegance that are aged exclusively in large Slavonian oak. Indigenous yeast is used to bring floral, ethereal notes to these wines.

"Castell'in Villa is one of the most rigorously traditional Chianti Classicos from one of the most historic estates in Chianti Classico. The 1971 Chianti Classico Riserva is very pretty. Sweet dried cherries, earthiness, flowers, mint and tobacco are some of the nuances that are woven together in this lovely, delicate Chianti Classico. The 1971 is fully mature in its aromas and flavors, but there is enough Sangiovese acidity to allow it to drink well for at least another handful of years. Hints of autumn leaves and crushed flowers linger on the Pinot-like finish. This is a great showing from the first Riserva ever made at Castell-in Villa. It is a gorgeous wine. The 1971 is the only wine made from the original vineyard. As was the custom at the time, the wine was bottled in more than one lot. A big, fruity red, almost New World in style except for the vibrant acidity and firm backbone of tannins. The bright fruit evokes black cherry and black currant flavors, while cedar and leather notes add depth. A complete package.
