Bourgogne Cote d'Or 'En Coulezain' Vieilles Vignes -- This wine comes from 50-year-old vines located in the eastern part of Volnay. The climate in Coulezain is distinguished by a clayey and fairly deep soil, providing suppleness and roundness to this vintage.

The fame of Pommard in the 19th century earned it the image of a wine that is both forceful and virile. In reality, time, terroir and methods of vinification of Domaine GERMAIN have all combined to create a more subtle reality, a wine that is both richer and more sensitive. Its colour is the deep, dark red with mauve highlights. Its aromas are redolent of blackberry, bilberry, or gooseberry, cherry pit and ripe plum. Often, wild and feline notes develop with age. At full maturity, it tends towards leather, chocolate and pepper. It needs to be given time to open up to its fullest extent and to display its mouth-filling texture, its firm but delicate structure, its fruit-filled mouth, and its chewy tannins, which by then will be properly smoothed down.

1er Les Gravieres Numerus Clausus ---- A proportion, about a third, of the oldest vines (90yrs) are reserved for this cuvée, though some are also kept for the regular. The colour is darker, and the bouquet more rugged, less sensual. No criticism intended, this is designed as a grand vin de garde. There is a much more substantial structure, slightly more acidity as well as tannins, with a wealth of luxurious bit not over opulent fruit in between. Impressive. - 5/5 stars & 91-94pts

The succulent, even suave, but impressively punchy larger-bodied flavors display first-rate power and drive on the stony, balanced and very clearly built-to-age finale. This is always one of my favorite wines chez Lafarge as it often seems underappreciated relative to the Volnay 1ers that routinely receive top billing.
