2010 Bodegas Corral Barrel Fermented Crianza
2001 Gran Reserva
Wine Spectator Top 100 - #22 - "This generous red shows traditional character, with leafy, dried herb, tea and spice notes framing dried cherry, licorice and leather flavors. Firm tannins and balsamic acidity impart structure, and this shows plenty of depth, with a juicy, spicy finish. Drink now through 2025." - 94pts WS
WS:93 "Smoky and tarry notes give this rich red and austere character, but plum, licorice, soy and mineral notes promise an expressive future. The tannins and acidity are balanced and unobtrusive. Best from 2016-2030. 1,500 cases imported." - Tom Matthews
"The 2001 Gran Reserva, aged in American oak for 48 months, has a lifted minty bouquet reminiscent of mature Right Bank Bordeaux! The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins. It has the substance to suggest it will age over the next decade. Drink now-2022." - Wine Advocate
95% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha treated in 70% French & 30% American oak. The oak treatment on this terrific little Crianza is a bit unusual as in Rioja, American oak is the traditional favorite. This wine has an interesting story… Catalan chef Ferrán Adrià's of El Bulli fame started a new project which opened in Barcelona in 2012. The restaurant, called Tickets, is dedicated to the tapas culture and Adrià has tapped the Luis Cañas Crianza as the restaurant's sole Rioja. Now that's a feather in your cap. his wine has a beautiful nose of cherry, spice and liquorice. On the palate it has layer upon layer of rich fruit flavours all surrounded by silky smooth tannins.
